Having a long standing interest in African ritual art and visiting collections of the same, I was led to researching the people and places from which it originated.
Many wonderful, large format books by skilled photographers passed through my hands leaving me stunned with the natural beauty of these peoples and their stark visual power so well matched to the land .
The heads I have created in tribute to this otherworldly beauty are larger than life and a play on the Greco/Roman statuary remnants. A similarity may be noticed as if most of the heads were related, this is due to having been cast from an original head. I then made partial copies to finish, each with a unique presence.
The works all incorporate wood, metal, plaster and resins with polychrome variations. The bulk of this work dates from the late 90's and the early years of the new century .
